The desire to have any usable outdoor space in a Manhattan apartment is one for the most common for us urban dwellers. The small urban apartment is a typical design challenge to work around, and much of my projects have offered clever solutions come from confronting that challenge.
Dirty Drawers offers a clever and minimally invasive solution to those who want their own herbs and garden space. Prompted by the realization that the most incredible full sunlight would pour down right outside my window during the spring and summer months, I wanted to extend my apartment just outside the window to grow a variety of herbs and plants. I designed a support system for the container garden after the same way I saw AC units attached to existing window frames with no hardware or special tools. Outfitting a drawer slide on each side makes it easier to slide the drawer in and out for ease of maintenance.
The drawer pictured is 28" x 24" x 6" and can has enough room for a most common herbs: rosemary, thyme, basil, and mint. Plans are in the works to release a customizable product version in 2014.
